Oregon walnut 71″l x 31″w x 19 1/2″h

Like a lot of woodworkers, I fell in love with the work of George Nakashima and wanted to make similar furniture, but I never had the means to buy wide slabs until about five years ago, when I also happened to stumble upon Goby Walnut out in Oregon. I’ve bought slabs and other pieces of “free edge” walnut from them since then. Oregon walnut or West Coast walnut or claro walnut tends to have black streaks in it and more figure than Pennsylvania walnut, of which I also have slabs (and a little bit of English walnut, an different animal altogether). The ceramic centerpiece is by Ikuzi Teraki & Jeanne Bisson.
